The Project Management Institute (PMI) certification works as an international standard. In fact, PMI reports more than 1.7 million certification holders worldwide.<\/p>\n\n<p>Yet many candidates pick the wrong starting point. Some aim for the PMP before they have the required experience, so their application is rejected before they even sit the exam. Others, on the contrary, take the CAPM when their background already qualified them for the PMP.<\/p>\n\n<p>The timing also gives you a reason to take stock now. PMI has published a new PMP exam content outline, which took effect in July 2026. In addition, a rule about training providers changes on 1 December 2026. This article therefore compares the two certifications and explains what has changed. The CAPM, short for Certified Associate in Project Management, validates foundational knowledge. The PMP, short for Project Management Professional, validates your ability to lead projects.<\/p>\n\n<p>In other words, the difference is not just about difficulty. The CAPM shows that you know the vocabulary, methods and tools. The PMP, for its part, shows that you can apply them to real situations, with a team and stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n<p>Nor are the two certifications mutually exclusive. On the contrary, PMI designed them as steps along the same path. For instance, an active CAPM meets the PMP education requirement, as stated on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.org\/certifications\/project-management-pmp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official PMP certification page<\/a>. So you can start with one and move on to the other without losing anything.<\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"nouvel-examen\">The July 2026 PMP exam in four changes<\/h2>\n\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.itta.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/examen-pmp-2026-revision-1.webp\" alt=\"project manager reviewing notes before a certification exam\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n\n<p>PMI updates its exam every few years, based on a survey of practitioners. The new framework, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.org\/-\/media\/pmi\/documents\/public\/pdf\/certifications\/new-pmp-examination-content-outline-2026.pdf?rev=b618cf45573e4276a54151e7636c97bf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">July 2026 Examination Content Outline<\/a>, is the result. It mainly changes the content and leaves the format largely intact.<\/p>\n\n<h3>The business environment now makes up a quarter of the exam<\/h3>\n\n<p>The exam still rests on three domains. However, their weighting shifts sharply. People now account for 33% of the questions, Process for 41% and Business Environment for 26%. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/projectmanagementacademy.net\/resources\/blog\/pmp-exam-update-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">side-by-side analysis of the two versions<\/a>, that last domain carried only 8% in the previous exam.<\/p>\n\n<p>In practice, PMI expects project managers to think like business leaders. They must define project governance, manage compliance and steer risk. They also need to support change across the organization.<\/p>\n\n<h3>AI and sustainability join the syllabus<\/h3>\n\n<p>The PMI document says it plainly: artificial intelligence and sustainability were among the trends missing from the old exam. As a result, both are now assessed. For example, risk management now includes sustainability-related risks.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Agile and hybrid become the majority<\/h3>\n\n<p>About 40% of the questions cover predictive approaches, that is, the classic waterfall model. The remaining 60% are split between agile and hybrid. So a candidate who only knows traditional planning starts at a real disadvantage.<\/p>\n\n<h3>The format stays the same<\/h3>\n\n<p>The exam still has 180 questions in 240 minutes, with two ten-minute breaks. The number of tasks assessed rises to 26, though, spread across the three domains. It requires no project management experience, which makes it accessible right after graduation or during a career change.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Eligibility requirements<\/h3>\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmi.org\/certifications\/certified-associate-capm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official CAPM page<\/a>, three conditions are enough:<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n<li>a secondary school diploma, such as a high school diploma or an equivalent;<\/li>\n<li>being at least 18 years old;<\/li>\n<li>23 hours of project management education completed before the exam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3>What the exam covers<\/h3>\n\n<p>The exam has 150 questions in 180 minutes, including 15 unscored pretest questions. It covers four domains. Project management fundamentals account for 36%, predictive methods for 17%, agile for 20% and business analysis for 27%.<\/p>\n\n<p>That last share often surprises candidates. Still, it reflects reality on the ground: a project coordinator spends a lot of time clarifying requirements. The CAPM therefore also prepares you for roles close to business analysis.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Who the CAPM is for<\/h3>\n\n<p>It suits coordinators, project assistants and team members who want to speak the same language as their project manager. It also reassures recruiters looking at a junior profile.
