Mind-mapping is a visual idea structuring technique popularised by Tony Buzan, used for note-taking, brainstorming, project management and learning. Main tools are Xmind, MindManager, MindMeister, FreeMind and Coggle. ITTA offers a Soft Skills, Personal Efficiency and Management catalogue. Sessions delivered in Geneva, Lausanne and interactive virtual classroom.

Mind-mapping (or mind map) is a visual thinking technique developed in the 1970s by British psychologist Tony Buzan. The principle is simple: instead of taking linear notes (from top to bottom, line after line), you organise information around a central topic with branches radiating out, each branch itself able to subdivide. This radial structuring better exploits both brain hemispheres (analytical logic on the left, visual creativity on the right) and facilitates memorisation, idea association, and the overall view.
Mind-mapping is used in very varied contexts: note-taking (course, meeting, conference), brainstorming (collective idea generation), project management (visual WBS decomposition), strategic planning, writing (article or book plan), presentation or expose preparation, revision and learning, problem-solving. Tony Buzan made it a movement (World Memory Championships, international mind-mapping championships). In business, digital tools have democratised the practice: Xmind, MindManager (from Corel/Mindjet), MindMeister, MindNode, Coggle, Lucidchart, and more recently tools integrated into Notion, Obsidian Canvas, Miro.
ITTA does not currently have a dedicated “mind-mapping” course in the catalogue. This technique is rather addressed transversally in several soft skills and personal efficiency courses, where trainers introduce mind-mapping as one tool among others for note-taking, brainstorming and idea structuring.
For profiles interested in mind-mapping in a professional context, several ITTA sub-domains touch on the topic: Personal Efficiency and Organisation (time management, productivity, structuring), Creativity and Innovation (brainstorming, design thinking), Project Management (WBS, visual planning), Communication (presentation preparation and structured writing). The root sub-domain Soft Skills provides the global vision, and Management covers managerial uses of mind-mapping. For specific mind-mapping needs in-house (structured brainstorming workshop, project manager support, deployment of a tool like Xmind or MindManager), our pedagogical team can study the request case by case. Modalities communicated at need evaluation.
Instead of linear notes (sometimes illegible on rereading), mind-mapping captures information by theme and quickly retrieves decisions, actions, responsibilities. Typical tools: Xmind, MindManager, MindMeister, or simply a paper sketch.
To generate ideas around a topic (product launch, problem-solving, campaign planning), mind-mapping spontaneously structures contributions and links ideas by associations. Typical tools: Miro, Mural, MindMeister (real-time collaborative).
To decompose a project into tasks (Work Breakdown Structure), mind-mapping is more natural than sequential tools (Gantt). You start from the final deliverable and decompose into sub-deliverables. Typical tools: MindManager, Xmind Pro, completed by MS Project or Project Online.
To structure a presentation, article, client presentation, mind-mapping is an excellent plan tool. You capture all ideas, then hierarchise, then linearise for delivery. Typical tools: Xmind, MindNode, or a paper sketch.
Xmind is one of the most complete and accessible tools (free and Pro versions), very appreciated in business. MindManager (Corel) is the historical tool in Microsoft environment, with strong integration to Outlook, Word, Office and Teams. MindMeister specialises in online collaborative mind-mapping (remote meeting target). FreeMind is the historical open-source tool, written in Java, still active. Coggle is a simple web alternative, popular in education. Lucidchart goes beyond pure mind-mapping and covers UML diagrams, network diagrams, organigrams. Notion, Obsidian Canvas, Miro and Mural offer mind-mapping as one feature among others in broader visual work environments. Generative AI gradually enters these tools (branch suggestion, generation from a text brief, summary).
Does ITTA offer a dedicated mind-mapping course?
Not at this point a specific “mind-mapping” course. This technique is addressed transversally in our personal efficiency, creativity and project management courses. For a specific need, we study customised in-house sessions.
Do you need a specific tool or can you start on paper?
You can perfectly start on paper or whiteboard. Mind-mapping is above all a thinking technique. Digital tools bring collaborative functions, export, sharing, easy update. To start, paper is enough; for intensive pro use, Xmind or MindManager bring real gain.
Mind-mapping vs classic brainstorming: what difference?
Classic brainstorming generates ideas without immediate structure (post-its scattered on a wall). Mind-mapping structures ideas around a central topic from emergence. Both techniques are complementary: you can start with free brainstorming, then structure into a mind-map.
Is mind-mapping useful in project management?
Very useful for upstream phases: WBS decomposition, risk identification, stakeholder analysis, options brainstorming. Less suited to execution phases (task follow-up, operational planning) which require sequential tools (Gantt, kanban). Mind-mapping is complementary to classic project tools (MS Project, Jira, Trello).
For profiles wishing to integrate mind-mapping into a broader personal efficiency, creativity or project management approach, here are the catalogue’s key resources:
To deepen mind-mapping beyond our catalogue, several resources are recognised: Tony Buzan’s books (Mind Map Mastery, The Mind Map Book), specialised YouTube channels (Xmind tutorials, MindManager Academy), expert blogs (Litemind, MindMapTutor), online communities (r/mindmapping on Reddit). A personal efficiency or creativity course at ITTA remains an excellent foundation to contextualise mind-mapping use in a complete professional approach.
For specific mind-mapping needs in-house (structured brainstorming workshop, project team support, manager note-taking training), our pedagogical team studies the request case by case. The in-house format allows strong customisation: adaptation to the company context, tool choice (Xmind, MindManager, Miro), illustrations on real projects, post-training individual coaching. Sessions in Geneva, Lausanne and interactive virtual classroom depending on format.
Mind-mapping is a transverse skill that fits into a broader professional efficiency approach. The ITTA catalogue addresses individual and team productivity from several angles: personal organisation (time management, prioritisation), creativity (brainstorming, design thinking), communication (presentation preparation, structured writing), project management (planning, WBS), management (decision, information structuring). This integrated vision allows participants to leave with techniques applicable beyond the mind-map tool itself. Our soft skills and productivity trainers are active professionals (managers, consultants, trainers) able to contextualise mind-mapping in a broader path.
