Tableau Software, a widely used tool for interactive BI dashboards

Tableau Software is one of the market reference platforms for data visualisation and self-service Business Intelligence (BI). Launched in 2003 by Stanford researchers (Pat Hanrahan, Chris Stolte, Christian Chabot) and acquired by Salesforce in 2019, Tableau is today a standard in financial, sales, marketing and operations management. Its core value proposition: enable business analysts (non-developers) to produce rich, aesthetic and performant interactive dashboards by drag-and-drop, connecting to virtually all market data sources (Excel, CSV, SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Snowflake, Google BigQuery, Amazon Redshift, Databricks, Salesforce, web services).

The Tableau range covers the entire analytical data cycle: Tableau Desktop for visualisation creation, Tableau Prep for data preparation and cleaning (alternative to Power Query), Tableau Server (on-prem deployment) and Tableau Cloud (SaaS) for large-scale dashboard distribution and sharing, Tableau Mobile for consultation, Tableau Public for public sharing, Tableau Pulse for proactive AI-based alerts, and Einstein Discovery (integrated from Salesforce) for no-code predictive models. The fast learning curve and quality of rendered dashboards make Tableau a widely adopted choice in large accounts.

In French-speaking Switzerland, Geneva private banks, Lake Geneva international organisations, telecom operators, pharmaceutical industries, large insurers, university hospitals, distributors and cantonal administrations leverage Tableau for operational and strategic dashboards. Tableau often coexists with Microsoft Power BI in hybrid BI landscapes, each tool having its strengths (Tableau for visual sophistication, Power BI for Microsoft 365 and Fabric integration). ITTA offers the Tableau catalogue covering Fundamentals and Advanced levels.

Following a recognised Tableau training opens access to highly demanded roles: BI analyst, data analyst, business analyst, BI consultant, data-driven management controller, marketing analytics manager, data visualization specialist, dashboard designer, Tableau consultant. Whether you are preparing the Tableau Specialist certification or structuring your first operational dashboards, our Tableau training in Geneva and Lausanne covers the full path.

The ITTA Tableau catalogue

Tableau Desktop – Fundamentals

Tableau Desktop – Fundamentals is the entry training for profiles discovering Tableau Desktop. The programme covers Tableau Desktop onboarding (interface, shelves, marks, data pane), connections to data sources (Excel, CSV, SQL Server, PostgreSQL), understanding dimensions and measures, basic visualisations (bars, lines, scatter plots, heat maps, treemaps), geographic maps, aggregations and hierarchies, filters and sorting, simple calculations, formatting and styling, tooltips, worksheets, and assembling interactive dashboards. Targets business analysts, management controllers, business analysts, marketing managers, and non-technical profiles wanting analytical autonomy.

Tableau Desktop – Advanced

Tableau Desktop – Advanced is the training to go further on Tableau and produce professional quality dashboards. The programme covers level-of-detail (LOD) expressions (FIXED, INCLUDE, EXCLUDE), advanced calculations (table calculations, partitioning, addressing), dynamic parameters, actions (filter, highlight, URL, parameter), advanced visualisations (bullet chart, waterfall, gantt, sparklines, sankey), Tableau Prep for data preparation, advanced joins and unions, performance management (Hyper extracts, contexts), Tableau Server / Cloud for publishing and sharing, governance best practices, and introduction to Einstein Discovery for no-code predictive models. Targets confirmed data analysts, BI consultants and data visualization specialists.

Tableau and the publisher ecosystem at ITTA

Tableau fits into a broader analytics and BI ecosystem. The data analysis and BI sub-domain regroups Tableau, Power BI, Looker Studio and other market BI tools. The Microsoft Power BI publisher is the direct competitor to Tableau in Microsoft 365 landscapes and is very complementary to know for comparing and choosing according to context. The Microsoft Fabric publisher covers the unified Microsoft data + BI platform in which Power BI integrates. Analytics profiles benefit from mastering at least Tableau or Power BI, ideally both to adapt to the market.

Tableau trends in 2026

Tableau evolves rapidly in 2026 around several axes. Tableau Pulse brings proactive AI-based alerts, summarising key metric evolutions and notifying business users. Deep integration with Salesforce and Einstein Discovery enables generative analytics AI (natural language questions on dashboards, visualisation generation). The Tableau Cloud + Tableau Server coexistence remains structuring (SaaS cloud for speed, on-prem server for banking and public security constraints). Connections to lakehouses (Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery) become a standard. The Tableau Specialist certification (vendor-neutral entry) remains very demanded on the job market. Our pedagogical content regularly integrates these evolutions to remain aligned with current practices.

FAQ

What is the difference between Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server / Cloud?

Tableau Desktop is the authoring tool (BI analyst), installed on the workstation, to create dashboards and visualisations. Tableau Server is the on-prem distribution platform (deployed in your infrastructure), to publish and share dashboards to business users. Tableau Cloud (formerly Tableau Online) is the SaaS version hosted at Salesforce / Tableau. The choice depends on your constraints (sovereignty, banking compliance, AD integration). Our training mainly covers Desktop, with introduction to publishing.

Tableau or Power BI?

Both tools are BI market leaders. Power BI is often preferred when the IT landscape is very Microsoft (Microsoft 365, Azure, Fabric) with integrated cost. Tableau is often preferred when the stake is visual sophistication, design freedom, Salesforce integration. We offer both in our catalogue. For analytics profiles, mastering at least one is a strong asset, ideally both for versatility.

Is SQL knowledge required to follow a Tableau course?

No for the Fundamentals course: Excel knowledge is enough, Tableau handles connections and queries in the background. For the Advanced course and for data analysts wanting to master data warehouse sources (Snowflake, BigQuery, SQL Server), SQL basics are strongly recommended. Our SQL courses are available as prerequisite or in parallel.

Are your Tableau courses available for companies?

Yes, the entire Tableau catalogue is available in-house, in Geneva, Lausanne and in virtual classroom, with a programme adapted to your data sources (Salesforce CRM, ERP, Snowflake, SQL Server, Excel files) and business use cases (sales reporting, management control, marketing analytics, HR). Our team builds the specifications with you and organises sessions according to your calendar.
