PMI Project Management Institute: a widely used tool for project management

The Project Management Institute (PMI), founded in the United States in 1969, is a widely used tool body for project management. The PMBOK Guide (Project Management Body of Knowledge) and the PMP, CAPM, PMI-ACP, PMI-PBA and PMI-RMP certifications structure project practices worldwide. In Geneva, Lausanne and across French-speaking Switzerland, private banks, international organisations, hospitals, public services, industrial companies and consulting firms widely recognise the PMP certification as an official benchmark expected from senior project managers and programme directors.

ITTA offers a complete catalogue of the most demanded PMI certifications in French-speaking Switzerland. Our trainers are themselves PMP-certified and practise as project managers or consultants active in projects for Swiss and international companies, allowing them to share current concrete cases and illustrate PMBOK with real situations. The training organisation label guarantees the conformity of our training to PMI pedagogical requirements and the eligibility for PDUs (Professional Development Units) needed for certification renewal.

Following a recognised PMI training opens access to highly valued and internationally recognised roles: project manager, programme manager, programme director, PMO, senior consultant. The PMP certification remains one of the most demanded certifications in project manager job descriptions in French-speaking Switzerland, particularly at private banks, international organisations, IT services companies and software vendors.

Whether you are a beginner project manager, confirmed project manager targeting PMP, business profile evolving to project, business analyst adding PMI-PBA or senior transformation consultant, our PMI training in Geneva and Lausanne provides the skills and the common PMBOK vocabulary to pass your target certification.

ITTA PMI certification catalogue

CAPM Certified Associate in Project Management

The CAPM certification targets beginner project managers or profiles in early project career. The programme covers PMBOK fundamentals, common vocabulary, processes and knowledge areas. CAPM is accessible without prior project experience and constitutes an excellent milestone before PMP. This certification is particularly valued for support profiles joining a PMO or project team.

PMP Project Management Professional

The PMP certification is the most demanded and globally recognised PMI certification. It requires 36 months (3 years with degree) or 60 months (without bachelor degree) of project management experience and 35 contact hours of training. The programme covers PMBOK knowledge areas, processes, predictive, agile and hybrid approaches, and the human dimension of project leadership. PMP is widely expected in senior project manager job descriptions in banking, finance and international organisations.

PMI-ACP Agile Certified Practitioner

The PMI-ACP certification targets project managers and Scrum profiles driving in Agile methods. The programme covers Scrum, XP, Kanban, Lean, and Agile best practices. PMI-ACP is highly valued for profiles combining classic project management (PMP) and Agile, particularly in hybrid contexts common in French-speaking Switzerland.

PMI-PBA Professional in Business Analysis

The PMI-PBA certification targets business analysts driving transformation projects and working closely with project managers. This certification is addressed in the business analysis sub-domain complementing IIBA certifications (ECBA, CCBA, CBAP). PMI-PBA is particularly suited to PMP profiles adding a BA dimension.

PMI-RMP Risk Management Professional

The PMI-RMP certification targets expert profiles in project risk management, complementary to PMP for programme directors and PMO managers structuring risk analysis and treatment on complex programmes.

The PMI ecosystem and complementary certifications

PMI certifications fit into a broader project management ecosystem. The project management sub-domain regroups PMI, Prince2 and hybrid methods. Agile and Scrum training brings PSM (Professional Scrum Master), PSPO (Professional Scrum Product Owner) and SAFe certifications, complementary to PMI-ACP. The business analysis sub-domain covers IIBA (ECBA, CCBA, CBAP) and PMI-PBA certifications. Change management APMG training accompanies project managers on the change conduct dimension. The process and Lean management domain brings Lean Six Sigma, complementary to PMP on operational excellence.

PMI trends in 2026

Several evolutions are shaping the PMI ecosystem in 2026. PMBOK Guide 7th edition emphasises project management principles rather than processes, which makes practice more flexible. Hybrid Agile and classic approaches now dominate in practice, which makes PMP and PMI-ACP highly complementary. PMI Talent Triangle (technical skills, leadership, business management) structures professional development and PDUs. Integration of AI and data skills in project manager profiles becomes a structuring topic. Our pedagogical content regularly integrates these evolutions to remain aligned with current company practices.

FAQ

Which PMI certification to choose between CAPM and PMP?

CAPM is the natural entry for profiles in early project career or without formal experience. PMP targets confirmed project managers (3 to 5 years of experience depending on degree) and constitutes a widely used tool certification on the market. Many profiles follow CAPM early then PMP later. Our pedagogical team guides you according to your profile.

PMP or Prince2: which to choose?

PMP is more recognised internationally (USA, Asia, international organisations in French-speaking Switzerland), Prince2 is more present in European administrations and the United Kingdom. Many project managers in French-speaking Switzerland follow both according to their client context. Our pedagogical team guides you according to your role and target.

How many PDUs are needed to renew PMP?

PMP must be renewed every 3 years with 60 PDUs (Professional Development Units), distributed between Education (35 minimum) and Giving Back (up to 25). Our PMI training courses are eligible for Education PDUs, which facilitates renewal. Our pedagogical team supports you on tracking your PDUs programme.

Are your PMI courses available for companies?

Yes, the entire PMI catalogue is available in-house, in Geneva, Lausanne and in virtual classroom, with a programme adapted to your internal project methodologies. Our team builds the specifications with you and organises sessions according to your certification calendar.
