PRINCE2 6th Edition: the structured project management method

PRINCE2 (PRojects IN Controlled Environments) is the project management method published by PeopleCert/Axelos, originally developed for British administrations then adopted worldwide. PRINCE2 offers a structured framework based on 7 principles (continued business justification, learn from experience, defined roles and responsibilities, manage by stages, manage by exception, focus on products, tailor to suit the project), 7 themes (business case, organisation, quality, plans, risk, change, progress) and 7 processes (starting up, initiating, controlling a stage, managing product delivery, managing stage boundaries, directing, closing). This rigorous structure makes PRINCE2 a reference in regulated environments and large-scale projects.

In French-speaking Switzerland, cantonal administrations, Lake Geneva international organisations (UN, WHO, ICRC), private banks, public operators and large IT services companies frequently demand PRINCE2 certification for project managers, PMO heads and organisational consultants. PRINCE2 is particularly present in public tenders, infrastructure projects and multi-stakeholder contexts where documentary traceability and governance are critical. ITTA offers official PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner training, on-site in Geneva and Lausanne as well as in interactive virtual classroom with an accredited PRINCE2 trainer live.

Following a recognised PRINCE2 training opens access to highly valued roles: project manager, PMO head, project management consultant, programme coordinator, methodology officer. PRINCE2 certification is regularly demanded as a complement or alternative to PMP certification (PMI) depending on context: PRINCE2 more structured and governance-oriented, PMP broader and oriented towards body of knowledge and practices.

Whether you are preparing your first PRINCE2 Foundation certification, targeting the Practitioner level to concretely apply the method, or preparing the Foundation and Practitioner bundle to optimise your path, our PRINCE2 training in Geneva and Lausanne covers the entire official framework.

The PRINCE2 catalogue at ITTA

PRINCE2 Foundation

The PRINCE2 Foundation training validates understanding of PRINCE2 principles, themes and processes. The programme covers key concepts (programme, project, deliverable, stage, exception), the 7 principles, the 7 themes (business case, organisation, quality, plans, risk, change, progress), the 7 processes, roles and responsibilities (project board, project manager, team). This certification is the mandatory entry into the PRINCE2 path and often constitutes the first project management certification for an executive or consultant starting a project specialisation.

PRINCE2 Practitioner

The PRINCE2 Practitioner training validates the ability to concretely apply PRINCE2 on a real project. The programme deepens method tailoring to the project context, complex scenario analysis, use of management documents (PID, project plan, exception report, lessons learned), risk management, quality control, stage management and governance. Prerequisite: PRINCE2 Foundation. Targets active project managers, PMO heads, organisational consultants and programme coordinators.

PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner (bundle)

The PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner training combines both Foundation and Practitioner levels in a single intensive training with both exams taken at the end of the training. This option optimises training time and return on investment for profiles already comfortable with project management. The bundle is particularly suited to in-house training where several participants simultaneously target both certifications.

PRINCE2 and the ITTA project ecosystem

PRINCE2 certifications fit into a broader project management ecosystem at ITTA. The root PRINCE2 taxonomy regroups all PRINCE2 certifications (6th and 7th Edition, Agile). The project management sub-domain centralises all project certifications (PMP, PRINCE2, AgilePM). The PMI taxonomy covers PMP, CAPM and PMI-ACP certifications from the Project Management Institute, alternatives or complements to PRINCE2. The agile and Scrum sub-domain brings agile methodologies in which PRINCE2 Agile fits.

PRINCE2 trends in 2026

The PRINCE2 method continues to evolve in 2026. PRINCE2 7th Edition, recently published by PeopleCert, modernises the method by integrating more sustainable practices, people focus, digitisation of artefacts and articulation with agile approaches. PRINCE2 6th Edition remains the widely deployed reference in Swiss administrations and international organisations. PRINCE2 Agile, fusion of PRINCE2 and agile practices, gains visibility for hybrid projects. PeopleCert also maintains complementary certifications such as MSP (Managing Successful Programmes) and MoP (Management of Portfolios). Our pedagogical content regularly integrates the evolution of official syllabuses.

Why train on PRINCE2 at ITTA

ITTA offers a training catalogue. Our PRINCE2 trainers are project managers and project management consultants accredited PRINCE2 active with Swiss and international clients, covering administrations, international organisations, banking, healthcare and industry. Our pedagogical team supports you in choosing the path (Foundation only, Practitioner, bundle), preparing the exams and identifying funding solutions adapted to your professional situation.

Our pedagogical approach favours learning by doing, with concrete case studies inspired by the daily work of Swiss projects: administrative projects, digital transformation programmes, regulated projects (banking, healthcare), multi-stakeholder projects. Each session combines training time, applied exercises on PRINCE2 processes, role-plays and exchanges with the trainer, allowing each participant to progress at their own pace and present themselves in the best conditions at the exam.

Our training is aimed at varied audiences: beginner or experienced project managers, PMO heads, organisational consultants, programme coordinators, project sponsors, methodology teams. Our pedagogical team adapts the content to the participants’ context.

FAQ

PRINCE2 Foundation or Practitioner: where to start?

PRINCE2 Foundation must be taken before Practitioner. Foundation validates understanding of the method (concepts, principles, themes, processes). Practitioner validates the ability to concretely apply the method on a project. Many participants follow both consecutively via the Foundation and Practitioner bundle to optimise training time and pass both exams.

PRINCE2 or PMP: which to choose?

PRINCE2 is more structured and governance-oriented, particularly present in administrations, international organisations and regulated environments. PMP (PMI) is broader, oriented towards body of knowledge and practices, dominant in North America and certain multinationals. The choice depends on the employer context and organisation preferences. Many senior project managers hold both certifications to maximise international employability.

Is prior experience required to take PRINCE2 Foundation?

No, PRINCE2 Foundation is accessible without formal experience prerequisite. General project management knowledge or operational project experience however strongly facilitates concept understanding. For Practitioner, the Foundation certification is mandatory and recent project experience is strongly recommended.

Are your PRINCE2 courses available for companies?

Yes, the entire PRINCE2 catalogue is available in-house, in Geneva, Lausanne and in virtual classroom, with a programme adapted to your internal project methodology, your PMO and your use cases. Our team builds the specifications with you and organises sessions according to your calendar.
